The brief
The University of Southampton approached eLaHub to create an accessible, engaging e-learning module to support student and staff wellbeing, covering key topics around keeping safe and well on campus and beyond. The module needed to meet the University’s accessibility standards and be deliverable to a diverse audience including students with disabilities.
The challenge
Creating inclusive learning content for a large higher education institution requires navigating a wide range of learner needs. The content had to be engaging for traditional and neurodiverse learners alike, meet WCAG 2.1 accessibility guidelines, and work seamlessly across devices including assistive technology.
The subject matter — covering sensitive topics around personal safety and wellbeing — also required a careful, empathetic tone and clear signposting to support services.
Our approach
eLaHub built the module in Articulate Rise 360, chosen for its responsive design and strong built-in accessibility features. The team worked closely with the University’s subject matter experts to develop content that was accurate, approachable, and directly relevant to the University of Southampton community.
Accessibility was designed in from the start — not retrofitted. This included keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, appropriate colour contrast, and plain-language writing throughout. Interactive elements were designed to work for all learners, with clear instructions and meaningful alt text on all images.
The results
The Keeping safe and well module was shortlisted for the Learning Technologies Best Not-for-profit and Public Sector Project award — recognition that accessible, high-quality e-learning for public sector institutions can set the standard for the wider industry.
The module has been used across the University of Southampton to support student and staff wellbeing, providing a consistent, accessible resource that can be taken at any time and on any device.
